RIFPC Releases New Report on RI Food System

The Rhode Island Food Policy Council, in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Rhode Island Foundation, released a new report on the state’s food system today.

This report, by Karen Karp & Partners, follows the 2011 Food System Assessment, also by KK&P, and provides a framework to assess both the progress made since 2011 as well as the gaps that still remain. The

Update to the RI Food Assessment: 2011-2016 and Beyond (Update) explores the connections and synergies among multiple aspects of the food system, highlighting the interactions between local food, public health, the environment, and economic growth in the state of Rhode Island.

The event was held at the Rhode Island Foundation, a beautiful venue with a fantastic view of the city.  The speaking program featured remarks from First Gentleman Andy Moffit, DEM Director Janet Coit, RI Director of Food Strategy Sue AnderBois, RIFPC Chair Kenneth Payne, Rhode Island Foundation President & CEO Neil Steinberg, as well as a presentation of highlights from the Update by KK&P Senior Consultant Shayna Cohen.

This report comes at a crucial time in Rhode Island, as the state positions itself to develop its first statewide food plan.
