Newport Health Equity Zone, Food Access Working Group

The Challenge

Only 19% of North End and Broadway residents eat fruits and vegetables more than once per day.

The Approach

With its Fresh Zone Initiative, the food access working group partners with local businesses so that residents are knowledgeable of the fresh fruits and vegetables available at reasonable prices in corner stores, farmer’s markets, and food pantries.

By The Numbers

Since the Newport HEZ was established in 2015, the food access working group has made significant strides in improving food access. The Farmer’s Markets have been active since 2017.

  • Total Farmer’s Market weeks held: 31
  • Total Farmer’s Market customers: 8,539
  • Total Farmer’s Market EBT transactions: 133
  • Total Farmer’s Market EBT sales: $1,723
  • Total Food Explorers: 400+

Ensure Food Security for All Rhode Islanders

This organization directly impacts food access in the North End and Broadway neighborhoods through civic engagement.

Program Description

Goal
To increase access to healthy, sustainable food in the Newport Health Equity Zone.

Statement of Impact
This organization directly impacts food access in the North End and Broadway neighborhoods through civic engagement.

Statement of Changes
Though the second round of data still needs to be collected and compared to baseline, leaders within the Newport HEZ point to the increase in sales and availability of fresh fruits and vegetables in corner stores as signs that food access is improving within the North End and Broadway neighborhoods. Further, the introduction of farmer’s markets is playing a role beyond food access by creating a venue for community gathering, civic engagement, and social cohesion. Residents feel more connected to the community and are learning how to advocate for change.

Future Plans

The Newport HEZ is waiting for the next round of data collection to make evidence-informed decisions. Still, the working group hopes to shift from access to a food justice lens, since this is an equity-based project.
