Boost Supports for Local Composting

Transform Waste into Health

We’re proposing a groundbreaking solution: a $2/ton surcharge on all landfill-bound waste. The funds from this surcharge will go directly to composting and waste reduction grants, benefiting municipalities and community organizations, with priority funding for marginalized/excluded groups, small businesses, and veterans.

The Municipal Composting Readiness Report highlights the urgent need for RI municipalities to adapt to rising waste disposal costs and align with the ‘Act on Climate’. It explores composting practices, and gives practical recommendations to help communities across RI.

Why this Matters

  • Job creation: Composting can generate 1,400 full-time jobs for every million tons of material processed.
  • Environmental impact: Composting strengthens soil health and reduces methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas.
  • Sustainable future: Supports the development of sustainable infrastructure for a greener future.
