Policy Priorities

Incentivize Surplus Food Donation

Feed People, Not the Landfill

In Rhode Island, we’re taking a bold step forward in the fight against hunger and environmental waste. With the introduction of Bills S2757 and H7995, we’re proposing a tax credit for qualified taxpayers who donate surplus food to local organizations. This initiative is more than just a policy; it’s a commitment to weaving together community support and environmental stewardship into the very fabric of our state.

Why this Matters

Join the Movement: Be a Part of the Change:
We’re calling on proactive businesses, visionary legislators, and passionate community members to support this cause. By transforming surplus food into a symbol of hope, sustainability, and environmental stewardship, we can collectively:

  • Reduce contributions to landfills and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Ensure that surplus food reaches those in need, alleviating hunger in Rhode Island.
  • Provide financial incentives for businesses to participate in this sustainable and socially responsible initiative.
  • Establish Rhode Island as a leader in environmental and social responsibility.

The Wasted Food Solutions Action Network

The Wasted Food Solutions Action Network is a statewide network of practitioners, policymakers, state agencies, people with lived experience, private enterprises, municipal leaders, and others working from the ground up to advance solutions to create a more sustainable, circular eco-system for surplus and wasted food including reduction, recovery, donation, composting and all alternatives to our current linear food waste system.

Our goal is to create the first Rhode Island Food Waste Action Plan, and your participation will make this plan better and more meaningful in every way, allowing us to significantly change the future of food waste in Rhode Island together.

Ways to get involved:

  • Complete our survey and help inform the Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan and the state food strategy.

Everyone working to reduce food waste and wasted food in Rhode Island is welcome to join this network. Join today!
