Our Work

Surplus Food Donation

The purpose of this group is to help make surplus food donation a common practice among Rhode Island businesses and institutions that experience surplus food. We intend to address this through several mediums, while prioritizing Advocacy for RI State policies that encourage food donation.

Approximately 31% of RI households face food insecurity while 722 tons of food fills the RI Central landfill daily (equivalent in size of 175 elephants each day) and businesses lose money from food that goes to waste. Food Donation is an easy and sustainable solution towards eliminating food loss, supporting businesses and achieving 100% food security in Rhode Island.

Urgent Action Required: Signature Request

Sign this letter to Governor McKee and Secretary of Commerce Tanner and encourage them to include a tax credit for food donation in the Governor’s proposed 2024 budget.

The fact is food loss is everyone’s problem.

  • Approximately 41% of Rhode Island households with children face food insecurity, too often forced to choose between the quality and quantity of food for themselves and their loved ones.
  • Yet, perfectly good food right around the corner is tossed: 722 tons of food feeds the Rhode Island Central landfill daily, equivalent in size to 175 elephants each day; which emits methane, and affects the air we breath. The Rhode Island Central Landfill is on track to reach maximum capacity by 2040.

Food Donation is an easy and sustainable solution towards eliminating food loss, supporting businesses, protecting the environment, and achieving 100% food security in Rhode Island – a WIN, WIN WIN, WIN!  Now is the time to make surplus food donation a common practice in Rhode Island. We hope you will join us in supporting businesses that do the right thing.
